Family Planning/Teenage Sexual Health

All our doctors provide this service and will be happy to discuss individual needs. Anyone requiring an IUCD (coil) or contraceptive implant will be referred to Dr Thomas.

Maternity

Antenatal clinics are held at the surgery. Doctors share the care of most patients with the local hospital. Mothers-to-be can choose where they give birth.

Cervical Smears

We offer three-yearly cervical screening for all women up to 65 years of age. The smears are usually performed by our nurses who are specially trained. Smear results can take up to six weeks to be processed.

Results of Medical Tests

These may be obtained by ringing after 2p.m. The receptionist may then inform you of the result, or she may ask you to arrange an appointment with your doctor to discuss your result. It is practice policy only to give results of medical tests to patients over 16 and to the parents of those below this age.

Laboratory Specimens

Specimens are sent to the hospital daily. If you are asked to bring a specimen to the surgery please ensure that we receive it before 10.30 a.m.

Health Promotion

The aim of promoting health is to try to identify risk factors at an early stage and prevent them from going on to cause ill health. For this reason we will ask about drinking and smoking habits and measure your blood pressure and weight from time to time. (Especially important in people with a family history of heart disease, diabetes or stroke).

Medical Examinations

Medical examinations for special purposes, such as fitness to travel, pre-employment, insurance, driving medicals etc are undertaken outside normal surgery hours and a fee will be payable. Please contact the surgery to make an appointment. The receptionist will advise on the appropriate fee.

Flu Vaccinations

Every autumn an influenza vaccination is particularly recommended for patients with heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes and residents of nursing and rest homes. In addition, all patients over 65 should be vaccinated annually.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

This practice is an authorised yellow fever vaccination centre.

Travel Vaccinations

Please complete a ‘Travel Risk assessment’ form and make an appointment at least four weeks in advance of your holiday to ensure adequate cover. A charge will be made for certain immunisations and vaccinations which are not covered by the NHS. A list of these charges is held at reception.
